This workshop is focused on the investigation framework and process once a decision has been made that a complaint or workplace matter ought to be formally investigated.

Recommended for staff who need to know what is involved in conducting an effective workplace investigation and the reason for aspects of that process, this workshop focuses on the investigation framework and process once a decision has been made that a complaint or workplace matter ought to be formally investigated.

Using scenarios and practical examples, this module provides participants with a detailed overview of the workplace investigation process, with reference to identifying and managing some key challenges that can arise.

  • What are the goals of a workplace investigation?
  • Hallmarks of a good process: Natural justice and procedural fairness
  • The importance of scope: from complaint to allegations
  • Managing participants
  • Collecting and assessing evidence
  • What makes the ‘findings of fact’ reliable?
  • Common procedural issues
  • The essentials of a good investigation report

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of procedural fairness in a workplace investigation and the process and roles of conducting a workplace investigation.

Learn what to look for to ensure that an investigation is proceeding as it should and when and how to intervene if the investigation is off track.
