The challenges faced by HR departments in managing academic workforce is not directly comparable to other organisations of a similar workforce size in a different industry.

  • Identify staffing trends within your university and the university sector as a whole.
  • Set appropriate staffing goals.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of HR initiatives.
  • Identify key areas of improvement.
  • Guide your HR departmental strategic plan and allow greater HR input to the University’s strategic planning.

History of AHEIA UniAnalytics

2004

Start of HR Benchmarking
AHEIA UniAnalytics, formerly known as HR Benchmarking Program, was initiated by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) back in early 2004. The program aims to establish a highly relevant, low cost and flexible HR Benchmarking program with a high level of university participation. Universities participating in the program are committed to working together to better manage human resources in the higher education sector.

2007

Launch of Universities HR Standards Project
The QUT/Talent2 Workplace Productivity Programme (WPP) project on 'HR Standards in Australian Universities' built a collection of HR Standards for five university HR activity areas, including:

  • Learning and development
  • Remuneration, benefits and recognition
  • Workforce planning
  • Attraction and selection
  • Performance management

Project Aim

The Universities HR Standards Project aims to develop a consistent set of National Advisory Standards for the Professional Practice of Human Resources in Australian universities.

Project Rationale

There is no similar standards established specifically for the Australian universities and every universities have independent standards. Similar standards have been observed in other counties at the time of the project launch.

There is also a growing recognition of the need for a HR framework as it was challenging for universities to benchmark themselves against other universities.

Project Background

QUT received funding from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) under the Workplace Productivity Programme (WPP) to develop and deliver a National Advisory Standards for the Professional Practice of Human Resources in Australian universities. This project was completed in collaboration with Talent2 and Bond University.

A number of HR measures and metrices relevant to the university sector were identified and were subsequently used as the research base in establishing the National Advisory Standards for the Professional Practice of HR in Australian Universities.

The National Advisory Standard for the Professional Practice of HR in Australian Universities was developed by subject matter experts from the participating Australian Universities.

The standard was finalised in January 2011 and endorsed by the project sponsor in March 2011.
