Fixed Term Contract Update: Regulation Extended to 1 January 2025

25 June 2025

It is advised that following extensive discussions with DEWR and the NTEU, the Government has confirmed an additional six-month extension to the introduction of the new fixed-term contract limitations in the Fair Work Act 2009 for higher education employees. This means that the new limitations will not apply in the sector until 1 January 2025.

A copy of the Regulation extending the period of implementation until 1 January 2025 for Higher Education employees is available here: Federal Register of Legislation - Fair Work Amendment (Fixed Term Contracts) Regulations 2024. For ease of reference, the original Regulation is available here.

AHEIA will be continuing to work with DEWR and the NTEU over the coming months towards a regulation that provides an ongoing solution for the higher education sector. For further information, please contact Craig Laughton, Executive Director, AHEIA.
