Regulatory ‘turf war’ prospect

29 May 2026

AHEIA is calling for a review of the higher education regulatory system, arguing that universities are facing increasing compliance complexity due to overlapping responsibilities and inconsistent expectations from multiple regulators. While supporting strong regulation and accountability, AHEIA says duplicated reporting and regulatory requirements are creating uncertainty, increasing costs, and diverting resources away from teaching, research and student support. The Association is advocating for clearer regulatory boundaries, better coordination between regulators, and regular regulatory impact assessments to reduce unnecessary compliance burdens and improve the effectiveness of regulation across the sector.
