AHEIA Call for Greater Coordination Across Higher Education Regulators

15 June 2026

AHEIA has called for a comprehensive review of Australia's higher education regulatory landscape, warning that universities are facing increasing complexity, duplication and compliance burden as regulatory responsibilities continue to expand across multiple agencies.

AHEIA Executive Director Craig Laughton said universities support strong regulation and accountability, but the growing number of regulatory requirements and overlapping obligations is creating significant challenges for the sector.

AHEIA is concerned that the cumulative impact of these overlapping requirements is increasing compliance costs and diverting resources away from universities' core function of teaching, research and student support.

AHEIA is calling for greater coordinator between state and federal regulators, clearer guidance on areas of shared responsibility, and more regular assessments of the cumulative regulatory burden placed on universities.

AHEIA believes a more coordinated and streamlined regulatory approach would improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary duplication and enable universities to focus more resources on delivery high-quality outcomes for students and the broader community.
